Opening Doors Leadership Program

Opening Doors- A community leadership program for social inclusion

The ‘Opening Doors Program’ provides opportunities for grass roots leadership across the
local government areas of Boroondara, Monash, Whitehorse and Manningham.

The 'Opening Doors Program' aims to promote social inclusion by developing community leaders to undertake local action in their communities.

The Opening Doors program has been operating in the Inner East Melbourne region since 2009. In 2011, the program was rolled out into the South East Melbourne region.

The program

The Opening Doors program recruits approximately 20 influential community members every year to develop their natural leadership skills, before they each develop a community project to address isolation.

The aim is to get people involved who have links to groups or communities at risk of isolation including those of different cultures, nationalities, age groups, abilities and wealth. The program helps build their confidence and gives them the opportunity to participate and have a positive impact on their community.

Key achievements

Since 2009:
  • 4200 community members have engaged in new and positive ways within their community as a direct result of Opening Doors
  • 75 community members have graduated with the knowledge, skills and confidence to implement community projects
  • Over 50 community-based projects have been established that promote social connection
